If you haven't heard of it already, there are companies out there called research panels and/or survey companies that are contracted by businesses for their market research. This is a necessary part of business, as it helps determine what products businesses will sell, at what price they will sell them, and what kind of people they should be targeting their advertising toward. Businesses need your opinions, and they are willing to pay for them. Some, in fact, pay very well.
Earnings from these survey panels vary with each survey and company you register for. Some panels only offer sweepstakes entries, and you may be tempted to skip over registering for those -- don't. Just because they say they offer sweepstakes or points for taking surveys doesn't mean you will never get an invitation for a focus group, product test or cash payment. Ultimately whether you take a survey or not is up to you, so it is to your benefit to register for all the companies you find, then filter them from your email after you actually receive the email invitation.
Generally, surveys will pay between $2-$8 and can take and about 15 minutes to complete. There are however a good many survey that only pay $1 (you don't have to do those if you don't feel its worth it), and also those that pay up to $75 or more. If you are selected to participate in a focus group, you may even be paid up to $150/hr or more.
When it comes right down to it, even the lower paying surveys are a great way to obtain some extra income. If you take four surveys for $2 each, you are still making $8 an hour at home for brainless and painless work.
